Are Impact-Resistant Shingles Worth It in Ohio?

Class 4 impact-resistant shingles cost roughly 10 to 20 percent more than standard architectural. In western Ohio, that upgrade frequently pays for itself.
What Class 4 means
The shingle survives a two-inch steel ball dropped from twenty feet without cracking the mat, tested from both sides. Manufacturers achieve this with a polymer-modified asphalt that stays flexible and absorbs impact rather than fracturing.
The insurance discount
Many Ohio carriers offer a premium reduction for Class 4 roofs, commonly in the 5 to 25 percent range on the dwelling portion. Over the life of the roof, that often exceeds the upgrade cost. Get the discount confirmed by your agent before you commit.
Where it matters most
Darke County, Clark County, and the western edge of Miami County see the most frequent damaging hail. Greenville and Springfield homeowners in particular should price the upgrade every time.
The caveat
Impact resistance reduces functional damage, not cosmetic marking. Some policies now exclude cosmetic damage on Class 4 roofs specifically, which is a reasonable trade but worth reading before you sign.
