When Should You Replace Your Siding?

Siding fails quietly. By the time it looks bad, the wall behind it has often been getting wet for a while.
Visible signs
Warped or buckled panels, widespread cracking, chalky residue on your hand after touching it, and fading so uneven that repairs can't be matched.
Hidden signs
Rising heating bills, interior wall staining, soft spots when you press the wall from outside, and peeling interior paint on exterior walls — all point to moisture behind the siding.
Storm damage
Hail-cracked panels don't self-heal and each crack is a water entry point. If your roof took hail, the west and south walls likely did too.
The opportunity
Siding replacement is the only practical time to add exterior insulation and correct the house wrap and window flashing. If you're doing it, do the assembly right underneath.
