Spring Roof Checklist for Miami Valley Homeowners

Severe weather season in western Ohio runs roughly March through July. Ten minutes in March is worth a great deal in June.
Walk the perimeter
Look for shingle pieces or granule piles in the landscaping, dented gutters or downspouts from winter ice, and any daylight visible under the eave where soffit has come loose.
Scan the roof with binoculars
Check the ridge line for lifted cap shingles, the rakes for missing tabs, and around every penetration for cracked boots or displaced flashing. Note anything that looks different from last year.
Check drainage
Clear the gutters after the maple seeds drop. Run a hose into the highest gutter and watch for overflow, standing water, and where the downspouts discharge.
Look inside
Attic check with a flashlight on a bright day: daylight, staining, damp insulation, or frost residue on the deck all mean something to address before storm season.
