A Realistic Roof Maintenance Schedule for Ohio Homeowners

Roof maintenance isn't complicated and it doesn't require getting on a ladder for most of it. Here's a schedule that actually gets followed.
Spring
Walk the perimeter after the last frost. Look for shingle debris in the beds, check gutters for granule buildup, and scan the roof with binoculars for lifted or missing tabs from winter wind. Clean gutters once the maple seeds finish dropping.
Summer
Check the attic on a hot afternoon. If it's brutally hot and still, you have a ventilation problem worth fixing before it costs you shingle life. Trim branches back at least six feet from the roof surface.
Fall
Clean gutters after the leaves are down — this is the most important single maintenance task in Ohio. Check that downspouts discharge away from the foundation. Have any known flashing issues repaired before freeze-thaw season.
Winter
Watch for icicles at the eaves, which signal an ice dam forming. Note any ceiling stains immediately. Don't climb up there; call instead.
