Roofing Warranties Explained: Material vs Workmanship
Published
Most roof failures are installation failures, and most homeowners are covered for the wrong thing. Here's how the two warranty types actually work.

Material warranties
The manufacturer covers defects in the shingle itself. These are rare. Standard coverage is also prorated, meaning a failure in year eighteen of a thirty-year warranty pays a small fraction of replacement cost.
Workmanship warranties
The contractor covers their installation. This is what actually protects you, because installation error causes most premature failures. Length varies from one year to lifetime; ten years is a reasonable middle ground and worth asking about explicitly.
System warranties
When a certified contractor installs a complete single-manufacturer system — starter, underlayment, shingles, ridge cap, ventilation — manufacturers offer extended non-prorated coverage that includes labor. This is the strongest coverage available and requires no additional cost beyond using matched components.
What voids coverage
Installing over an existing layer, inadequate ventilation, unauthorized repairs, and pressure washing. Register the warranty after installation; many are void if not registered within a set window.
