Ridge Vent vs Box Vents vs Powered Fans

There are three common ways to exhaust an attic, and mixing them is usually worse than picking one and doing it properly.
Ridge vent
Continuous exhaust along the entire ridge line. It's the best option for most homes: even airflow, no moving parts, and nearly invisible from the ground. It requires an adequately long ridge and matching soffit intake to work.
Box vents
Static vents cut into the field of the roof. They work, but only ventilate the area near each vent, leaving dead zones between. Common on older Huber Heights and Vandalia homes where ridge vent wasn't standard.
Powered fans
Effective at moving air, but they can depressurize the attic and pull conditioned air out of the house through ceiling gaps — which raises your energy bill while ventilating. We rarely recommend them.
Don't mix systems
A ridge vent plus box vents on the same roof plane short-circuits: the ridge pulls air from the nearest box vent instead of from the soffits, and the lower attic never ventilates.
