Are Gutter Guards Worth It? An Honest Assessment

We install gutter guards and we also remove a lot of failed ones. The technology varies enormously, and price doesn't perfectly predict performance.
What works
Stainless micro-mesh mounted at the correct pitch handles maple seeds, pine needles, and shingle grit — the three things that defeat everything else. Reverse-curve solid surface guards work well in heavy leaf areas but can overshoot in torrential rain if not adjusted properly.
What doesn't
Foam inserts hold moisture and grow things. Plastic screens sag and pop out under ice load. Vinyl clip-in covers warp in the sun. All three are cheap for a reason.
Installation matters as much as product
Guards wedged deep under the second shingle course can lift shingles and void roof warranties. Correct installation fastens to the gutter and front lip, or under only the first course with the proper pitch.
Realistic expectations
Good guards eliminate cleaning, not maintenance. The mesh surface may need a rinse every couple of years under heavy canopy, and cottonwood fluff defeats nearly everything for a few weeks each June.
